A Recital of Songs by Schubert, Fauré, Debussy and also Negro Spirituals
Cambridge Road Methodist Church, as part of its concert series this year, presents a song recital featuring German Art Song (Kunstlieder), French Art Song (Mélodie) and a genre of American Art Song, the Negro Spiritual. All of these songs have their roots in the 19th century and they have lived in the hearts and the concert repertoire of singers all over the world since they were written. Jeanne Conard Jones has programmed for us a selection of her favourite songs from these three genres. She says, “Every singer has songs that have been with them for the whole of their careers, brought out again and again and repeated with affection and a deeper understanding every time they’re sung.” She will be accompanied by pianist Jobe Baker-Sullivan, a composer and arranger who is in demand by ensembles of many genres. He relishes the partnership’s immersion in his first love and the source of his training, the strictly classical. There will be a departing collection at the door, to be used for the work of the church and the necessary repair of the organ.
